Bret Michaels
Hard Rock Café
Pittsburgh, PA
11.21.04

Poison’s Bret Michaels is now touring in an effort to promote his latest solo effort, Freedom of Sound, which promises to be a hard rockin’ release with a country flare (if the sampling he gave us was any indication).  For some his performance at the Hard Rock Café on November 21 was long anticipated since Michaels had to cancel a show here last April. Thus, it was no surprise that he packed in a great crowd this Sunday night.

For those wondering if there will be too much twang at this show for their tastes, don’t fret.  While he did sneak in a surprise rendition of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Gimme Three Steps” (which came hand-n-hand with a round of free beer for everyone over 21 in the club (and yes wristbands WERE CHECKED!) and two songs off the new album, this is definitely still a rock-n-roll concert.

Newer material included his new single “All I Ever Needed,” as well as “New Breed of American Cowboy,” (from Michaels's soon to be released "Freedom Of Sound" CD) the later of which wouldn’t be categorized as country by most, as well as “Bitter Sweet” and “Raine” from Michaels’ last solo release.  Otherwise this was an early Thanksgiving feast for Poison fans…

“Talk Dirty to Me” kicked things off and “Nothin But a Good Time” wound things down in the usual Poison tradition.  With his own backing band, Michaels blazed through quite a bit of the Poison artillery including the ballads “Every Rose Has its Thorn” and “Somethin to Believe In.” And of course, the a great selection of the party songs that Poison made famous like “Your Mama Don’t Dance” and “Unskinny Bop.”

Kudos to Michaels for putting so much into a performance with an obvious bit of the flu setting in that was adding a rasp to his voice when he spoke but did not hinder his vocals.  The consummate performer, Michaels gave his all to crowd and left everyone satisfied.
