Formed in 1994 by guitarist Bryan Martin, Witch
Meadow released a demo in 1995 titled "When Midnight Calls" and in 1996 released
the CD "Down Eternity's Hall". Witch Meadow features raw edged power metal with
vocalist Paul Wyrostek in the Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth range. Musically, the band
is reminds me of Pittsburgh's Child Of Fire.
Opener "Time Will Tell" is a
straight ahead power metal composition which is followed by a similar track in
"Bitter Trials". "Kiss Of Beltaine" builds slowly and features a really cool
solo by guitarist Bryan Martin. A doomy Black Sabbath vibe haunts "Do You Want
To Live Forever?" which is the standout track of the CD with thick riffs and
high pitched vocals. "Soldier Of Fortune" is another aggressive, stripped down
track which shows the potential of the band from a songwriting and musical
perspective. According to the liner notes, "The Gift" is a short story…I don't
think this story has a happy ending but the song itself is a stronger closer to
an impressive disc.
Martin is working on a new solo
project titled Thor's Hammer which will be in the same vein musically as Witch
Meadow. "Do You Want To Live Forever?" would be an excellent choice of a track
to rework with a stronger production behind it. I look forward to hearing more
from Bryan Martin in the near future.
