Winterfell is a Central Pennsylvania-based band that plays a
technical brand of traditional power metal drawing influences from
Manowar and Iced Earth.
The complexity of Winterfell's compositions suggests a band that has
been together for much longer than 4 years and in their early 20's.
The twin guitar leads of Andy Craven and Jason Nadeau are
technically superb without being overly flashy. Their riffs
are very crisp and they possess and excellent sound which so many
bands lack. Robb Graves strong vocals are reminiscent of
Kevin Barlow from Iced Earth. Graves ability to hit the low
tones and high screams (as is shown in the excellent epic 10 1/2
minute track "The Will Of The King") allow Winterfell to compose
tracks that are diverse in speed and emotion. Drummer James
Irvine keeps the back end rock solid with his appealing snare tone
and double bass drum attack.
Overall, Winterfell's compositions are as previously mentioned of
epic nature possessing intricate time changes that challenge the
listener to pay close attention. This is especially apparent
on "War Angel" which features impressive guitar solos as well.
Winterfell is to be commended for their CD packaging and for placing
four strong songs on this disc instead of falling into the trap of
recording mediocre songs just to have a full-length CD.
Considering "Winter Is Coming" is their debut effort, Winterfell has
an impressive start and can only improve with time.
