TRANSENDENCE
Meridian Project

Rarely these days does a song send a chill through me on the first listen. Upon hearing “No Trace” by Transcendence from their CD "The Meridian Project", I was completely floored by this song. It is a ballad of heartbreak, but the song is so incredibly moving in the sheer power of Greg Drew pouring his emotions into the vocal. Upon reading more about the band, I was surprised to find out that this 5-piece band hails from Dallas, TX and not from Europe. Drew’s vocals are rich in tone and immediately distinct. The closest comparison I could draw to Drew in terms of singing would be Harry Conklin of Jag Panzer. “Omega” also sounds as if it would easily find a home on a Jag Panzer CD as well.

Musically, Transcendence packs a serious punch of talented musicians whose styling at times leans into the progressive metal genre however not to the point of being a purely progressive romp. Guitarist Jeff Ford and drummer Paul Fanguy cite influences of Dream Theater and bassist Kirk Wood cites Geddy Lee, Steve Harris and Chris Squire of Yes. Keyboardist John Howser sports an impressive resume of past bands and projects and influences of Front Line Assembly, Genesis and Dream Theater as well.
