The Truth has made its mark as one of few (if not the only)
melodic hard rock bands in the Pittsburgh area. Though the band
was formed in February of 1998, its roots were first grounded
more than a decade ago guitarist when Geo. Bennett and drummer
Bobby Kunkel joined forces keyboardist Rick Gallagher. The trio
later met up with guitarist Eric Simon lead vocalist Dave
Lindauer to perform along with about 20 other bands at the
Kennywood Park Battle of the Bands competition, and despite
their lack of prep time as a full ensemble, the quartet took
home the prize.
After some line-up changes their band released their first
album, Groove Machine under the name Stone Romeo and began
playing the local Pittsburgh bar scene. But unfortunately, as
the band began writing and recording material for its second
release, tensions between them and their management became a
problem and eventually lead to a break-up in the spring of 1994.
When a 1997 Rock charity project called Star Maker presented the
opportunity for the members to join forces again, however, their
was new hope for the band. And in late 1998 Geo Bennett, Bobby
Kunkel, Rick Gallagher, Dave Lindauer, and Brian Osburn began
rehearsals for a new project called The Truth.
"I think the name encompasses a few things. The 'truth' about
the band is that we like to write good strong rock tunes," says
Kunkel, "stuff that is memorable but not too cliched. We like to
draw from a variety of styles without being pompous or arrogant,
because that can turn a lot of average listeners off. Also the
'truth' is that people like stuff they can sing to and use as a
soundtrack to their lives."
Today the band has a new release entitled Dying to Live, which
they've supported through live performances and distribution in
local outlets. And rather than reflecting upon the darker
musical trends of the past decade, the band brings focus to a
brighter style drawling from strong melodies, and guitar-driven
power ballads much like the rock bands of the mid-to-late
eighties.
