Formed in
October 1996, Northern Virginia is the home to the beautifully
somber music of Rain Fell Within. From the first track, the midtempo
"A False Reality", lead vocalist/keyboardist Dawn Smith's haunting,
operatic vocals weave an intricate web of false hope and anguish.
Throughout all five tracks of Rain Fell Within's CD "Believe" the
band display the ability to create atmospheric music that is free of
the restrictions of many other gothic / black / doom metal releases.
The band has avoided the use of a male "death growl" vocal much to
their advantage and obvious musical maturity and confidence. Kevin
Thomas and Owen Davis share guitar parts while Charles Gore handles
the bass and Tim Miller plays percussion. The guitars, keyboards and
percussion all compliment each other as opposed to fighting for a
leading role.
4 out of the 5 songs on the CD time in at over 8 minutes in length.
The song structures fluctuate often enough to keep the listener
attentive. This is especially true of the morose "Sorrow Becomes Me"
which contains many vocal delivery changes and showcases Dawn's
impressive range.
Comparisons / influences can be drawn to Nightwish and The
Gathering. However, Dawn's vocal dynamics and tone are much
different than Anneke from The Gathering in that her voice is much
stronger and mature in overall range.
Rain Fell Within produced the CD along with Jason Ian Vaughn Eckert
and Ron Vento. The overall sound is very professional and crystal
clear. The packaging of the CD and inlays are quite impressive as
well. Obviously, Rain Fell Within has taken their time in presenting
a high quality product both musically and aesthetically.
