New York guitarist Michael Staertow's solo
release "Oxygen" is a disc of many moods and styles. Musically, "Oxygen"
recalls such artists as Extreme and the Galatic Cowboys along with King's X in
some areas. While Staertow cites influences such as Eddie Van Halen, Ace
Frehley and Neal Schon, his playing never points to blatant lifting of material.
"Oxygen" never falls into any particular groove, thus diversity is the name of
the game across the CD. A key to the "Oxygen" is the fact that Staertow
allows his fingers to fly and soloing is not at a loss on this disc.
Considering that many talented guitarists seem afraid to get the labeled as a
"shredder", Michael seemingly plays what he feels instead of in terms of what
may think. Fans of bands like Mr. Big, Extreme, and others that a bit of
groove in the mix will appreciate the effort put forth on Oxygen.
