Punishing metal from New York, Malstrom has a power thrashing
sound that recalls bands such as Nuclear Assault and Kreator.
"Obligated by Obscurity" contains five tracks and has thick
guitars, menacing vocals and yet possesses enough melody to make
listenable multiple times. Vocalist Jeff Jardine sounds
similar to Mike Petrozza from Kreator, which along with the
thrash overtones makes them a good comparison. All five
tracks time in at over 5 minutes, allowing for breaks and time
changes which showcase the technical diversity of the band.
This is most evident on the track "Eleven" which features some
excellent guitar work from Mike Capasso. Closing track
"Into the Maelstrom" would be best described as a defining
signature song that would make an excellent ending track in a
live setting. Overall, Malstrom has delivered an initial
solid CDr that could very well garner some metal label interest.
