In Search Of Truth

Hailing from
Gothenburg, Sweden, Evergrey returns with their 3rd release in 4 years titled
"In Search Of Truth". Produced by King Diamond cohort and
guitarist Andy Larocque, Evergrey has recorded a concept CD (regarding alien
abduction) that stays true to the depressing music coming from this region of
Sweden. Unlike Children of Bodom and In Flames, Evergrey has a power
progressive metal approach and more importantly a clean vocal delivery which is
most welcome.
"The Masterplan" is a straight ahead song that 3/4 of the way through hits you
with Uriah Heep styled keyboards. "Rulers Of The Mind" is a musical
rollercoaster of emotions, styles and vocal harmonies.
Throughout the CD, hints of other bands come across ever so slightly yet not so
definitive as to suggest blatant influence. Even more surprising for a concept
CD is the fact that the disc has an immediate alluring effect. Thomas Englund's
vocals at times bare a slim resemblance to Glenn Hughes with a smooth and rough
approach depending on the mood of the composition.
Why all the bands from this region seem so miserable is a mystery to me, but
Evergrey delivers an aggressive release that is strong end to end and is unique
from other power prog metal bands on the scene today. A definite sleeper pick
for top releases of 2001. |
