BRASS KITTEN
Across America
Nightmare Records

Listening to Brass Kitten’s “Across America” CD recently released on Nightmare Records, I just shook my head. Here is another band from the late 80’s / early 90’s who should have made the big show but were instead overlooked for the awful White Trash, Kingofthehill and Slammin Gladys’ of the world. “Across America” is a melodic hard rock / pop metal release full of memorable songs with strong riffs. According to the band bio, Brass Kitten toured from 1988 through 1992 playing almost 300 shows a year

”Can’t Hold Back The Young” is one of the best compositions of this style that I have heard in years. Definitely, a good time summer driving song. Opening cuts Crossfire” and “Sweet Love Affair” are also fun, sing-along rockers with strong harmonies. In terms of comparisons, try a hybrid of Skid Row, the first Wildside and Hardline. Steve Philbrook’s vocals are very similar to Sebastian Bach and fit the music perfectly. Kellie Roulette (Bass) and Sid (Drums) are currently playing with Stevie Rachelle’s latest incarnation of Tuff.

Brass Kitten is a great example of all that was positive in regards to the hard rock / pop metal scene. The influences of many of the better bands of the genre are apparent. Nightmare Records is to be commended for issuing this CD. A reissue of the band’s debut release “EZ – N Pretty” would be most welcome.
