As
a killer follow-up to two years of touring in support of his latest collection
of anthems, Ronnie James Dio has released Evil or Divine. A live DVD recorded
during a concert at Roseland Ballroom in New York City on the ever so
appropriate, Friday, the 13th of December 2002. The vocal legend is
joined by Jimmy Bain on Bass, Simon Wright on Drums, Doug Aldrich on Guitar, and
Scott Warren on Keyboards.
Recorded in
front of what seems like an endless sea of screaming fans, the disc offers
fifteen raw live tracks of music from Dio’s latest studio release, as well as
classics like “Rainbow In The Dark,” “Last in Line,” and “Holy Diver.”
Fortunately, Dio does not neglect his legacy with Rainbow or Black Sabbath.
The band offers up tracks such as "Man On The Silver Mountain" and "Long Love
Rock and Roll" from Rainbow and "Children of the Sea" and "Heaven And Hell" from
Black Sabbath.
Unlikely many other artists who are willing to just play the hits and serve up
the catalog, Dio dives into newer material as well. like the lead track
"Killing The Dragon", "Push" and "Fever Dream" all of which stand proud next to
his classics. His voice is impeccable, which is remarkable for a man of 63 years
of age.
This video is without a doubt ‘a must have’ for those who have not been lucky
enough to catch a live performance from this powerful and unforgettable
vocalist, and a welcome reminder of Dio’s precision and remarkable energy (even
after decades of performances) for those who have. Even though it was
recorded for DVD, the film footage used is often grainy, giving the feel of a
much older release. Whether this was done on purpose or not, I am not
sure.
In addition to
the full concert footage, the DVD features a lengthy and intriguing interview
with Ronnie James Dio, a photo gallery, and behind the scenes footage from the
filming of the video for “Push.”
Dio can be
found on tour in the U.S. with Iron Maiden and Motorhead this July and August in
support of this DVD release. His band line-up will stay the same with the
exception of lead guitar. Doug Aldrich has joined David Coverdale’s latest
incarnation of Whitesnake, and former Dio guitarist Craig Goldy has returned for
this tour. However, there’s been no word on how definite the personnel
change will be.
