The latest CD release from Chris Poland
(Megadeth, Damn The Machine) and his band OHM is a triumph for
musicians in more ways than one. Poland, Kofi Baker (drums, son of
Ginger Baker) Robertino Pagliari (bass) recorded a live concert at
the studios of public radio station KPFK in Los Angeles on
8/30/2003. Considering what a rarity it is these days to here a live
concert on the radio, the ability to capture the magic of this live
event for release makes all the more special.
OHM is an instrumental band that takes its cues from a variety of
styles; rock, jazz, fusion and some blues for good measure. The bass
playing of Pagliari is the highlight of the disc and is absolutely
monsterous. He is by far in the same league as Billy Sheehan with
his incredible talent and more importantly honest feel. Baker’s
drumming is outstanding and considering his pedigree, rightly so.
Poland keeps enough rock guitar in the mix to keep the music away
from being strictly a jazz fusion type of release.
OHM is quite fortunate that they were able to pull of this live
radio event at KPFK in these dire days of monopolistic radio
practices. Guaranteed that you will never hear anything this purely
musical on a Clear Channel controlled station. |
