When I reviewed Winterfell's previous
effort, I was taken to task by a member of the band for
giving them too good a review and not suggesting improvements
they could make. Hmm, sounds like an invitation to nail
"The Veil Of Summer" to the wall!
Since Winterfell are in the niche of power / progressive metal,
the comparison to Kansas' "Dust In The Wind" at the beginning of
lead track "Threnody" may seem odd, but being compared to a
musical juggernaut the likes of Kansas is actually high praise.
The track gets heavier throughout and then because a bit more
subdue towards the end. "Autumn Knight" has more of early
90's Fates Warning vibe. Taking this path a little further
occurs on "The Iris". While Fates Warning is a very
talented band, their music has over the years become extremely
stale, thus I would suggest avoiding becoming to enamored with
this style. Fortunately, Winterfell adds enough heavy
guitar soloing on the track to avoid this pratfall.
Where Winterfell really shines is on "Legacy" with its palatable
blend of speed, melody and vocal dynamics making it the
highlight song on the album. "Once And Again" finds
Winterfell heading towards an Iced Earth meets early Metallica
epic. These two tracks are the kind of songs Winterfell
excels with quite well. Another track that could fall into
this category is the Jag Panzer laced "The Beggar King".
"Catacombs" closes out the disc with an absolutely punishing
track.
Whereas the early part of the CD looked to be possibly heading
in the wrong direction, Winterfell stays closer to the power
metal leanings of Iced Earth and once again delivers a most
impressive release.
