ATA D'ARC
Call Of Peace
RavenRock Productions

Brazil's Ata D'Arc unleashes their power metal debut "Call Of Peace" possessing a vocalist that sounds nearly dead on to the mighty Rob Halford.  On the lead title track singer Tulio Cesar Torres unleashes his metal god vocal prowess in fine fashion along his the Halfordesque intonations.  The song however sounds like it was written by Riot during the late 1990's.  "Shadows" is an incredibly impressive featuring the lovely keyboard work of Teo Hautesqueste which compliments Torres' singing which on this track wonders into Midnight (Crimson Glory) territory.  It is a mellower track but very finely crafted.

Guitarist Otavio Medeiros is no slouch himself as it would be quite easy to be outshined by Torres' vocal heroics.  From his subtle guitar interludes on "Dark Eyes" to the transition into a much heavier song, Medeiros keeps his playing up front and most appealing.  He shows a flare for diversity that helps make "Call Of Peace" stand out amongst many other releases we have received recently.  Ricardo Linassi provides a mighty tight back end and a sonically pleasing drum sound.  As I harp on continually, you have to have a solid, strong sounding backend for heavy metal compositions to truly work.

"Streets Of Darkness" sounds a bit like the later works of Angel Dust and has a slight tint of progressive leanings in the track.  "Time For The Time" is a lovely acoustic track and closing track "Helpless Cry" falls more along the lines of an Italian symphonic metal track ala Rhapsody with its maniacal keyboard solo.

Ata D'Arc was a most welcome and unexpected surprise for us to review and I would expect this release to generate some interests amongst the metal labels that still cater to this genre of music.
